The Academy Plymouth is an incredible space for anyone looking to train hard and grow fast — whether you’re just getting started or sharpening your competitive edge. The gym has a welcoming atmosphere, high-level instruction, and a strong focus on discipline and community.
Best place to train by far. The coaches are technical and beyond kind and all around dope people. Everyone at the gym is excited and happy to be there and wanting others to get better and grow with them. The academy plymouth is a great place for people starting out and who’ve been in martial arts before.
Absolutely fantastic gym. Has brought me from a point of little BJJ experience to competing and winning in tournaments. All the coaches are committed to your learning and are highly adaptable to your needs and how you learn. All are very experienced and some of the chillest guys around.
As a mom trying to get back into training after having kids, here is a game changer! I was nervous about starting again, but the instructors are soooo supportive, no matter your fitness level. The workouts are challenging but fun, and I can already feel myself getting stronger 💪💪💪 One of the best parts?

Third, all levels really are welcome — ask about a dedicated beginners or fundamentals class time so your first session is alongside others who are also starting out. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics on pads and bags — not fighting. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: shorts or athletic wear and a t-shirt; you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and hand wraps if you have them — many gyms lend gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gloves, wraps, a mouthguard, and shin guards. Sparring is optional and comes later, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the coach. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
