Muay Thai Gyms by the Numbers, 2026

We mapped every muay thai gym in America — 3,149 gyms with 234,322 customer reviews between them. Here's what the data says: how much a class actually costs, which states have the most gyms per resident, where the muay thai capitals are, and what else these gyms train under one roof. How much does muay thai cost? The one-line answer

The most-asked question in the sport, answered from the 154 gyms in the directory that publicly post a price: the median drop-in muay thai class is about $40, with most gyms landing between $25 and $75 a class. The full picture — price bands, what's driving the spread, and the state-by-state index — is on the Muay Thai Class Cost Index.

Which states have the most muay thai gyms per capita?

Nationally there are about 9.3 muay thai gyms per million residents. The per-capita crown goes to New Jersey at 18 gyms per million — 171 gyms for a state of 9.5 million people — with New Hampshire at 14.2 and Colorado at 13.6 close behind. Muay thai clusters where combat-sports culture runs deep, not simply where the most people live — which is why the gap between the top and bottom of this table is worth a look before you go hunting for your first gym. At the other end, Wyoming has just 3.4 per million.

#StateGymsPer million people
1 New Jersey 171 18
2 New Hampshire 20 14.2
3 Colorado 81 13.6
4 Massachusetts 96 13.5
5 California 526 13.3

12 Nevada 33 10.1
13 Connecticut 37 10.1
14 Idaho 20 10
15 District of Columbia 7 10

By raw count the big states still win — California has 526, Texas has 302, Florida has 244 — but per resident, New Jersey is the easiest place in America to find a gym near you. Full state table: muay-thai-gyms-per-capita.csv.

What else do muay thai gyms teach?

Muay thai gyms are rarely muay-thai-only — 94.5% also train at least one other martial art under the same roof, an average of 3.7 other disciplines each. The most common companions: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (75.5%), Kickboxing (71.7%), MMA (63.3%), Boxing (60.3%). That's the real shape of the American muay thai gym — a striking-and-grappling house, not a single-style studio.

Inside the gyms

Of the 3,149 gyms in the directory, 1,905 are genuine muay thai gyms — the art of eight limbs is on their schedule — with the rest being martial-arts and combat-fitness gyms whose muay thai classes earn them a place here. From our review and website mining so far (these counts are floors — they require evidence, and enrichment is ongoing):

These attributes are why we badge listings: browse gyms that offer a free trial, ones that are beginner-friendly, kids & teens classes, and the muay thai class types from fundamentals to sparring to clinch.

Methodology: gym counts from our continuously maintained national directory (public business listings, filtered to genuine muay thai gyms — no listings without a muay thai class on the schedule); attribute counts (beginner-friendly, kids, free trial, private lessons, fitness, fight team, women's) and the disciplines mix are mined from gym websites and customer reviews, so every count is a floor that grows as our crawls continue; drop-in prices are the gyms' own publicly posted figures; population = US Census 2024 estimates. Per-capita = gyms ÷ state population × 1,000,000. Want the dataset for a story? Email us — we're happy to cut the numbers by state or metro, with attribution.
