Update: My son and I wound up switching to E9 FC. I still visit other gyms from time to time, but E9 has become my home gym. There is a wide range of experience (from new people to black belts), and it is welcoming to hobbyists and competitors alike. The coaching is definitely top notch.
We are a military family that came up to the Fredericksburg area for the long weekend. From the second we walked into the door, we felt welcome. The atmosphere and culture created by the individuals at this gym are palpable and contagious.
E9 was the BJJ Gym for my son the past 2 years. Before we moved him there, he had been taking jujitsu for several years at other places and honestly was ready to move on. E9 changed that.
I've been training for about 15 years. Enlisted 9 is one of the best run organizations I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. All the instructors are very professional and are willing to help anyone that walks through the doors.

What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling the basics on pads and bags — not fighting. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: shorts or athletic wear and a t-shirt; you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and hand wraps if you have them — many gyms lend gloves for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call.
